Making Rhythm in Bronze music accessible to the public in a concertised gamelan performance 

2017

Georgetown Festival

Rhythm in Bronze was part of the Georgetown Festival 2017, performing at Gat Lebuh Macallum.

The performance was set amidst blocks of community housing and enabled the musicians to interact closely with local communities, sharing the experience and the music of the gamelan in a relaxed outdoor environment.

2016

AGA @ Georgetown Festival

Rhythm in Bronze (RiB) represented Malaysia at the Asian Gems in the Arts (AGA) that showcased and promoted unique talents from Asian countries. It was held in conjunction with the Federation of Asian Cultural Promotion (FACP) Conference and Georgetown Festival.

2015

Jeonju International Sori Festival

The Jeonju International Sori Festival is a global music festival featuring top performing arts groups from around the world that showcases various foreign traditional music and world music.

Rhythm in Bronze were invited to perform a mixed 45-minute repertoire (concert-length pieces, light pieces, music, vocals) It was an honour to represent Malaysia and showcase our musical and cultural offerings alongside other artists of caliber from not just Asia, but around the world, and demonstrate the evolutional possibilities of traditional music grounded in Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage.

Rainforest World Music Festival

Invited and fully sponsored by the Sarawak Tourism Board, Rhythm in Bronze performed at the Rainforest World Music Festival 2014.

The opportunity to showcase our music to an audience of programmers highlighted further that Rhythm in Bronze needs to share its music with other audiences around the world.

Borneo World Music Expo

Rhythm In Bronze was invited to showcase at the 1st Borneo World Music Expo in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. This Expo brings together the worlds of traditional, ethnic, folk and roots music, a first of its kind to be organised in Southeast Asia.

Kakiseni Festival

Rhythm in Bronze spent a boisterous night performing as part of the Kakiseni Festival on 27 April inside the bustling Pavilion shopping centre in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.

Terengganu World Gamelan Festival #3

Performing at the 3rd Terengganu World Gamelan, Rhythm in Bronze brought to the stage another take on concertised gamelan featuring singer Maria Yasmin

Terengganu World Gamelan Festival #2

Performing at the 2nd Terengganu World Gamelan, Rhythm in Bronze took it to the next level by introducing contemporary dance featuring Judimar Hernandez.

KLUE Urbanscapes Festival

Rhythm in Bronze was invited to perform at Urbanscapes 2009!

 

Urbanscapes is organised by KLue and is the first and only all-day “user-generated” creative arts festivals aimed at bringing together communities and participants from the fields of music, arts, fashion/ lifestyle and film under a single banner to showcase the best of the local scene.

 

RiB took the opportunity to collaborate in one of the songs with Reza Salleh and percussionists from Tugu Drum Circle.

Santai! RIB Style @ Esplanade

Rhythm in Bronze was invited by Esplanade to participate in their Flipside Program, which is part of the Singapore Arts Festival.

Terengganu World Gamelan Festival 

Rhythm in Bronze performed at the 1st Terengganu World Gamelan Festival together with other world gamelan ensembles like Singa Murthi from Bali, Surakarta from Java, Southbank from UK and Wasabi from Japan.

Wujud Antara

The very first Malaysians to perform at the prestigious Dewan Filharmonik Petronas. In Wujud Antara, new pieces were specially written by Malaysian, Indonesian and British composers, commissioned by Rhythm in Bronze, to further develop the repertoire of music for Malaysian gamelan.

Wujud Antara received three awards at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards in the music category for:

  • Best Group Performance - Instrumental,

  • Best Group Performance - Voice and

  • Best Music Direction (Sunetra Fernando and Jillian Ooi)

Laras Gong

Laras Gong - Rhythm in Bronze Gamelan Music was a concert presenting compositions specially written for Rhythm in Bronze by Malaysian, Indonesian and British composers for voice, percussion, flute and the electric guitar.

 

The production won Best Music Concert at the 2004 BOH Cameronian Arts Awards.

Rhythm in Bronze – A Concert of Gamelan Music

This programme was a step forward for Rhythm in Bronze. The traditional repertoires are richer and new pieces by contemporary composers were  introduced. The most distinctive feature of the programme was the presentation of different styles of gamelan composition. The repertoire also presented a wide range of sonorities.

1997

Rhythm in Bronze - A Gamelan Concert

Linking dance, tradition and contemporary musical styles on the gamelan, the first of the concertised gamelan series by the group, which also became the group’s name – Rhythm in Bronze - introduced its audience to the beauty of the gamelan in an informal, fun and light-hearted way. The repertoire demonstrated the intricacy of gamelan performance styles, glimpsed in fraction through the performance of various regional styles, such as Balinese and Javanese, adapted for the Malay gamelan orchestra.
